A PLACE THAT WHISPERS

Hidcote Manor Garden (National Trust, UK) presents A Place That Whispers, a new exhibition by Anderson & Low. Reimagining the historic Arts & Crafts garden as a place where photography, illustration, and narrative entwine, the project invites visitors beyond the visible landscape into a realm shaped by myth, memory, and imagination.

First encountered by Anderson & Low during the COVID pandemic, Hidcote revealed an uncanny stillness. In that quiet, the garden seemed to shift—its winding paths and enclosed spaces no longer fixed, but suggestive, as though holding stories just beyond reach.

“The realm of the fairy tale is never far from the woods. It lies just beyond the bend of the path, behind the knotted tree, or beneath the leaves where no one looks,” the artists note in an anonymous curatorial text accompanying the work.

Drawing on the darkly enchanting visual language of Arthur Rackham, the works merge photography with hand-drawn and digital elements. Forms appear to waver, figures gather at the edge of perception, and the familiar slips gently into the imagined. This body of work unfolds as a narrative sequence, where each image is paired with a myth, fairy tale, or fantastical text, forming a quiet dialogue between image and story.

Produced using an innovative direct-to-plate photopolymer gravure process, the exhibition reflects Anderson & Low’s ongoing research at Birmingham City University, advancing sustainable approaches to printmaking while preserving a tactile, almost otherworldly presence.
